An equal-access fine art gallery · Hawaiʻi Island
Original fine art ceramics from the lava fields of Hawaiʻi Island
Hawaiʻi Island is still being made. I make art here in the same spirit: with fire, by hand, one piece at a time. Original work, open to everyone.

The fire and the island
Fine art made on a lava lot in Kaʻū
My studio sits on a lava lot in Kaʻū, on the southern flank of Mauna Loa — looking out over the south side of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, at a landscape that is still becoming itself.
The imagery I build into my work comes from this place — the black pāhoehoe, the ʻōhiʻa lehua pushing through new rock, the slow alchemy of destruction becoming the most fertile soil on earth.
Beauty is always here, waiting for us to step inside it — in new growth and in what the fire leaves behind, in every state our world passes through.

The gallery team
Artist, curator and sales
I started in bronze, as an apprentice in a foundry in San Luis, Colorado, learning what happens when fire meets material. I've been a certified art teacher since 1999. Now I make art where the volcano reminds you every day that creation is violent and patient and ongoing.
Rebecca Parham, curator, selects the work and hosts live presentations and demos. Ken Plain, sales manager and U.S. Veteran, works with collectors, designers and hotels from North Carolina.
Trade · Homes and hospitality

Custom relief walls, kitchen tile and lobby pieces for luxury residences on every Hawaiian island, and volcano-themed art programs for hotels anywhere in the world. Every installation is registered and certified.

Process
The gas kiln decides
I fire with gas. The kiln's atmosphere, the oxygen, the slow climb in temperature all leave their mark on the glaze. No two pieces come out the same. That's the point. You can't fake what fire does.
Almost all of my glazes are mixed by hand here in the studio, from materials I source as locally as I can. The color on each piece starts with this place.

Lava Guide
What is pāhoehoe, anyway?
Smooth, ropy lava that flows like hot honey — and one of a dozen Hawaiian words the whole world uses for fire and stone. Learn them in two minutes, with the photos that inspire the work.
